Even China is not immune to the destructive path of automation. According to the Monetary Watch, the Changying Precision Technology Company in Dongguan has reduced its workforce from 650 to a mere 60 employees thanks to robots, and is considering reducing it further. Additionally, product defects have decreased from 25% to 5% while productivity has seen a 250% rise, making humans even less desirable on the factory floor. This growing move to automation may explain why Foxconn is debating opening factories in the United States to save on shipping costs.
The Changying Precision Technology Company focuses on the production of mobile phones and uses automated production lines. The robotic arms produce certain parts of the mobile phones at each station and the factory even makes use of autonomous transport trucks.
Though 60 is a shocking amount of people to be running and monitoring a whole factory, the trial for the robots is going so well that the general manager, Luo Weiqiang, said that the number of human employees may even drop to 20 someday.
