Andrew Currie of Open Attitude writes about his qualm with self-service checkouts. He notes that "Banks have managed to send the majority of their customers to the curb with Automated Teller Machines but there is at least added value there -- ATMs are accessible when the rest of the bank is not", yet self-service checkouts provide absolutely no advantage other than for the store to save on the costs of having a cashier. "If something goes wrong," notes Currie, "you still need the help of the assistant (defeating the 'self-service' moniker)".
