In this Computerworld article by Chris Pollock, he explains a little-known trick in the iPhone: a hidden serial port. As Chris explains, the possibility for system administrators to use their phone in server rooms, rather than having to use a laptop or remote terminal is extremely appealing: "the real benefit in all of this is that there are so many console packages for iPhone in Cydia now that you can have a fully functional computer, as useful as a Linux box, but without carrying around a laptop".

Diagrams and a step-by-step guide to make your iPhone do exactly that can be found at pinouts.ru.
