Star Trek's original theme, complete with a pre-recorded greeting by William Shatner, was played as part of the shuttle Discovery's wake-up call on March 7 at 2:23 a.m.
"Space, the final frontier. These have been the voyages of the Space Shuttle Discovery. Her 30 year mission: To seek out new science. To build new outposts. To bring nations together on the final frontier. To boldly go, and do, what no spacecraft has done before."
According to NASA, the wake-up call is a tradition that goes as far back as the Gemini mission, where mission control, using a playlist from music to dialogues from TV shows or radios, wakes up the crew. The Theme from Star Trek received the second most public votes from a Top 40 list in a Space Shuttle Program-sponsored song contest.
