Filed under A Modest Proposal, Matthew Baldwin of The Morning News explains how drivers can avoid killing a cyclist when forced to share the road with them.
As many cyclists are aware, there are entire bookstore sections devoted to advice on co-existing with cars. We read them as if our lives depended on them, because often they do. But there are also many things bike riders would like drivers to know -- like, we don't ride on the sidewalk for a reason (it's dangerous and in many places illegal), or that "cyclists" and "pedestrians on bicycles" are two distinct groups, or that we know we look ridiculous in bike shorts.
Unfortunately, while I agree about the difference between "cyclists" and "pedestrians on bicycles," I don't know if a driver could tell a law-abiding cyclist from the plethora of hipsters on their fixies, riding at night with no lights, no bell, no helmet and going through red lights, apart.
