As you may have noticed in our Staff page, guest blogging provided a significant portion of the articles that are available on our site today. This was a decade ago, when guest blogging wasn't even called that and sleazy SEO tactics were still in their infancy.
Today, it's a different story and as Google software engineer Matt Cutts explains it, guest blogging has become a "more and more spammy practice," where blog owners are offered money "to get links that pass PageRank".
[...] someone sent me a spam email offering money to get links that pass PageRank. Thats a clear violation of Googles quality guidelines. Moreover, weve been seeing more and more reports of guest blogging that are really paying for PageRank or worse, well insert some spammy links on your blog without you realizing it. I supposed that with the dead of the blog, this was only a matter of time.
Ultimately, this is why we cant have nice things in the SEO space: a trend starts out as authentic. Then more and more people pile on until only the barest trace of legitimate behavior remains. Weve reached the point in the downward spiral where people are hawking guest post outsourcing and writing articles about how to automate guest blogging.
So stick a fork in it: guest blogging is done; its just gotten too spammy. In general I wouldnt recommend accepting a guest blog post unless you are willing to vouch for someone personally or know them well. Likewise, I wouldnt recommend relying on guest posting, guest blogging sites, or guest blogging SEO as a linkbuilding strategy.
